For engineers and buyers
Pre-production checklist for PCB assembly
Go through this list before you send files for a quote. Every item you close now saves a re-spin or a delay later.
1. Documentation package
- Gerber RS-274X or X2 — all copper, mask and silkscreen layers + Excellon drill (or ODB++)
- BOM (xlsx/csv): designator, qty, value, package, manufacturer, MPN
- Pick-and-place file: designator, X, Y, rotation, side; units stated
- Assembly drawing (PDF): polarity, pin 1, DNP parts, special notes
- Board spec: layers, thickness, material, surface finish, impedance if any
2. Components & sourcing
- Approved alternates for passives and connectors listed in the BOM
- Long-lead, EOL and single-source parts identified
- Minimum order quantities checked against your batch size
- Moisture-sensitive parts (MSL) marked
- Consigned / turnkey / mixed supply agreed
3. Design for assembly (DFM)
- Global fiducials + local ones near fine-pitch parts
- Panelization with rails and tooling holes (or let us panelize)
- Polarity and pin-1 marks on silkscreen
- Enough clearance around tall parts and connectors
- Thermal relief on large pads; filled or tented vias near pads
4. Design for test (DFT)
- Test points on power rails and key signals
- Programming/debug header accessible after assembly
- Simple pass/fail criteria written down
- Test plan: what is measured, limits, how long per unit
5. RF boards — extra
- Controlled impedance and stack-up specified with the PCB fab
- Matching network parts accessible for tuning
- Shield can footprint and keep-out zones defined
- RF check method agreed: conducted or radiated
6. Firmware & first batch
- Production firmware build and flashing method defined
- Serial number / version label if needed
- Pilot run of a few units approved before the full batch
Free DFM review of your Gerber and BOM before the first batch. Quote usually within 48 hours; complex assemblies may take longer.
